How to Set Performance Options Win XP (New content 7/16/02)
This is the chief KB article describing performance optimization in Windows XP based on inbuilt standard controls. Quite a few useful tips are given on managing processor time, adjusting processor resources between foreground and background programs, and managing the computer’s memory resources, among other topics. I do not agree with the pagefile size recommendations they make — these may have been useful in Windows 2000, and show their roots in Unix system administration, but they certainly don’t apply to Windows XP. Eventually I hope to have an article here addressing XP memory management, similar to the existing article on Windows 98/ME memory management.

Configuring Page Files for Optimization and Recovery Win NT, Win 2000 (New content 7/16/02)
This is the Windows NT4 and Windows 2000 equivalent of the former article, at least in terms of pagefile configuration. For the specific purposes indicated here — in particular, for recovery purposes — these are probably correct recommendations.

How to Configure Paging Files for Optimization & Recovery in Win XP Win XP (New content 7/16/02)
Oh, and while we’re at it, here’s the actual Windows XP “exact fit” equivalent of the prior article. It is of value to tell you how to make the changes. The recommendations of making the pagefile 1.5 times the amount of RAM, though, appears to be no more valid in Win XP than it was in Windows 98. Win XP computers with more RAM need less pagefile room because they do less hard drive paging.
